BioVis3D is a software application for three-dimensional visualization and
analysis, specifically designed for biologists who work with serial sections.
Typically, a BioVis3D user obtains a set of digital images of serial sections
of the object to be studied using any appropriate acquisition device such as
optical or electronic microscopes. For example, it has
been applied to histological sections of several kinds of cells and serial
sections of insects.
BioVis3D offers the necessary tools to align sections spatially and detect
contours of the objects of interest with a simple semi-automatic procedure.
From this information, Biois3d builds three-dimensional models that can be
visualized, sectioned or made semitransparent and moved to appreciate all the
morphological details. It is also possible to create clouds of spheres in the
space to represent punctual objects whose shapes are not relevant. All
three-dimensional scenes are exportable to standard formats that can be
included as pictures or videos in publications, congress presentations and web
pages.
BioVis3D is also capable of calculating volumes, areas, and distances.
Technical requirements:
BioVis3D runs on all 32-bits Windows
editions, including Windows
Vista, XP, and 2000. 64-bits Windows
editions are not yet supported.
Hardware requirements are moderate,
a minimum of 512 MB ram is recommended.
